Marjorie Hellman, acrylic paintings

"My work reflects the relationship between the architecture, water, and reflected light found in Providence."

After teaching studio art at the college level in upstate New York, living in the South for more than a decade, and exhibiting throughout the Northeast, family circumstances brought Marjorie back to Providence - where she had studied at RISD 25 years earlier - in 2012.

Marjorie's work is responsive to what she sees and hears in the natural world that surrounds her. Since moving to Rhode Island, she gathers visual data by walking in Providence, the urban backdrop influencing the shape and color of her current work. While reminiscent of digital output, Marjorie does not leverage a computer for her compositions, but overlaps paint to create progressive geometric abstraction.
