Winter 2021- Exhibition,  HHPCRI                      Jim Kociuba, Painter

My subjects are tightly cropped tree studies.  The common thread in my work is my goal to portray light that passes through as well as backlights the surfaces of trees real and imagined.  The Japanese language has a single word, Komorebi, which describes light that passes through the leaves of trees.  My hope is to bring the view a sense of being closer to the slowed pulse of nature with these paintings.
The underpainting is traditionally painted with loose gestural brushwork. Short diagonal brushstrokes mimicking pixels overlaying some of the underpainting references the transition from the past to the present. These images appear to portray the struggle between traditional painting and the representation of digital media.
