Patricia Louise Corbett, oil painter

Impressionistic Style with a Surreal Flavor.

"I was born in North Hollywood, California the oldest of 13 children. At an early age I began creating simple pencil drawings. Whenever I could I would draw. It had a way of bringing comfort and peace in a life filled with caring for others for as long as I can remember. With the encouragement of my mother and early teachers I continued my art and felt proud to be known as "the artist" in school.

After high school, I worked as a secretary and attended El Camino College at night. My art teacher, Dr. Bluske, would play music to inspire his class. One evening he played Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata to inspire us to "go out and draw!" I'll never forget that night. Tears streaming down my cheeks to hear such profound musical sounds. I think I signed up for a voice class the next day! For three years I took both art and music classes along with any course that suited my fancy such as Anatomy, Geometry, History. Then, I witched my major to music and accepted a scholarship to a 4-year college graduating with honors and moving on to study opera at graduate school! I spent the next several years performing as a professional singer and travelled internationally singing and at the same time visiting all the museums of Italy, France, England and even Istambul and Prague, thanks to being a recipient of the National Endowment of the Arts.

When I retired from the stage it was a smooth transition back to art. I took workshops from well-known artists like Sherrie McGraw, Will McCarthy, Ron Rencher at the Scottsdale Art School, Sandra Wakeen and many others in CT. While visiting my daughter in Paris, France, I studied art at the Academié Le Grand Chaumier.

This past spring I returned to Italy for a 2-month art residency. It is difficult to express the impact that experience had on my psyche painting on a daily basis the simple landscapes while enjoying the serenity of the countryside.

I have always felt emboldened to paint. Oil is my medium. My style is impressionistic with a surreal flavor. Painting is where I feel at one with the universe."
